Welcome to the GBO New York

The German Book Office (GBO) New York, Inc., founded in 1998 as a non-profit organization, is a project of the Frankfurt Book Fair and acts as a bridge between the German and American publishing industries.

The Frankfurt Book Fair has created several Book Information Centers throughout the world. In addition to the GBO in New York, offices exist in Beijing, Bucharest, Moscow, and New Delhi. All offices provide information on the Frankfurt Book Fair as well as on their respective book markets.

The goal of the GBO is to make German literature accessible to the American book market. We seek to achieve this goal by acting as a liaison between our contacts in both the German and American publishing industries, and fostering relationships within both communities. Every year, the GBO invites a number of American editors on a trip to Germany, in order to create personal contacts between the two groups.

Rights List

To offer American editors an overview of newly released German-language titles, the GBO creates two rights lists. The fiction and non-fiction lists are released twice a year, and a list of children’s books once per year. Please click on “Rights List" for more information. Our rights lists support German-speaking rights holders by seeking to place German titles with appropriate American publishers. The ultimate goal is getting the books translated and published in America.

Events

The GBO also seeks to stimulate interest in German literature amongst readers as well. We organize readings, discussions and seminars to achieve this goal, and attend book fairs and conferences. Many of these events are open to the public, and information can be found in the “Events” section.

Translation grant

The GBO enjoys good relationships with German and American cultural institutions, and our closest partner is the Goethe-Institut. The GBO has teamed up with the Goethe-Institut to create the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation grant which guarantees translation funding for all titles on the fiction rights list and covers the costs for sample translations of these titles as well.
