About us

More than 50,000 new titles are published in Germany every year: fine literature, incisive scholarship, art and photography books, and re-issues of great German authors and thinkers of the past.

Each year, approximately 3,000 German titles are translated into over 40 languages. Many works by both new and established writers, however, remain unknown to English-speaking readers.

Publishers in North America face many difficulties when bringing out books first published abroad. Publishing professionals must be made aware of new titles suitable for the North American market. Works from other countries must be read and evaluated in the original language. And once a book has been chosen for publication, the right translator must be found and hired. Making readers aware of the books once they are published is another major challenge. The German Book Office is here to help.
