Intern Wanted

The German Book Office New York currently seeks an intern for January through March of 2011. See below for more information. If you are unavailable during those months but would like to be considered for future internship opportunities, please submit your resume and a cover letter clearly stating your availability.

The German Book Office (GBO) was founded as an initiative of the Frankfurt Book Fair to accommodate the increased interest of German publishers in selling rights to the U.S. The GBO is a source of information for U.S. publishers, providing details about German publishers and new German books. The GBO also supports German publishers by promoting German language titles for translation. The GBO acts as the New York office for the Frankfurt Book Fair.

GBO interns assist in all matters of the business, gaining a sense of the publishing industry and its acquisition of foreign titles. Tasks include establishing a network of U.S. editors and organizing informational visits to German publishing houses, promoting fiction and nonfiction titles via the rights list, arranging special promotion of children’s books, organizing several educational seminars for German and American publishing professionals, and supporting U.S. publishers in their promotion of German titles in translation.
GBO interns are compensated 250 Euros per month, paid in dollars at the current exchange rate. Although the GBO can assist in locating housing, no housing is provided.
Qualifications:

Excellent written and spoken English and German
Strong interest in German and U.S. book publishing, with some experience in the industry
Basic computer proficiency, familiarity with MS Excel and Word and internet search engines

We are currently looking for interns starting early 2011, but will accept applications to be kept on file for future openings.
