Geisteswissenschaften International: Start of New Round for Translation Funding for Innovative Humanities and Social Sciences Titles

With "Geisteswissenschaften International - Translation Funding Award for Humanities and Social Sciences from Germany", the German Publishers & Booksellers Association - Börsenverein -, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the German Federal Foreign Office reward innovative works written in German in the areas of the humanities and social sciences. With immediate effect, publishing companies can now apply for the first round of funding scheduled for this year. Total funds worth 400,000 euros are made available annually for the respective translation of titles into English.

As of now, publishing companies with academic publications in the fields of the humanities and social sciences can submit their applications online at the link provided. They propose the titles of their choice and provide a brief summary explaining their selection. The amount of funding is based on the individual case and the actual translation costs. Twice a year, the titles for funding are chosen by an independent panel made up of academics, specialist journalists and scientific publishers.

The objective is to contribute to wider international dissemination of the results of academic research coming from Germany and at the same time, to uphold German as an academic language and as the language of first publication for works in the humanities and social sciences. "Geisteswissenschaften International" sets out to strengthen Germany's standing as a location for educational and academic work. In the first two funding rounds last year, the German Publishers & Booksellers Association - Börsenverein -, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and the German Federal Foreign Office rewarded 32 outstanding German-language humanities and social science works. The funding provided in this way came to a total of 400,000 euros.

The judges on the panel are: Prof. Wolfgang Frühwald (honorary president of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), Dr. Sabine Cofalla (Akademie Verlag), Dr. Detlef Felken (Verlag C.H. Beck), Prof. Luca Giuliani (Institute for Advanced Study Berlin), Prof. Klaus Reichert (German Academy of Language and Literature), Dr. Johan Schloemann (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and Dr. Julia Voss (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).

Applications can be submitted as of now and up until 15 February 2009. Application documents and further information are available at the link provided. The Börsenverein contact for publishing companies: Anke Simon, phone: +49 (0) 69 1306-517, E-mail: simon@boev.de.
