Premiere of the weiss’raum at the Frankfurt Book Fair

Room to Move for Topics Surrounding the Future of Media Production

PRESS RELEASE

The weiss’raum in Hall 4.0 is a new forum that will take the creative potential of the Frankfurt Book Fair (14 – 18 October 2009) into new avenues. The goal in creating this space is to allow for the exploration of new business models in the areas of digital communication, strategy and print technology. The target groups are media & communication experts, manufacturers, content providers, agencies, media production specialists, and consumers. The clean design of the multifunctional weiss’raum creates, quite literally, a projection surface for a range of changing themes. “In addition to the Forum for Innovation and the Digital Market Place, we wanted to create a space for technology and future-oriented themes at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The weiss’raum is an expression of one of the core capabilities of the fair – bringing together new themes and ideas for the public, and doing so on an open and neutral platform,” says Juergen Boos, Director of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The weiss’raum will provide visitors with information though multiple channels, and is the first event at the fair that will take place not only in physical space but also virtually on the internet.

The technology and strategy consultant Bernd Zipper (Zipcon Consulting) was commissioned by the Frankfurt Book Fair to develop the concept of the weiss’raum. The term ‘weissraum’, which means white space, is borrowed from typography – it refers to the unprinted part of a page that helps a reader to quickly grasp important content and retain a sense of the whole. When this concept is adapted to the Frankfurt Book Fair, it implies that the weiss’raum is a space that promotes the transference of practical and future-oriented content. “The future of the media, in particular print media, is shaped in various ways,” says Bernd Zipper. “Roles are being divided anew. We took this into account in choosing the form of the presentation – the weiss’raum concept comes alive through a daily change of themes and exhibitors, as well as through the physical exhibition in Hall 4.0 and the virtual exhibition on the Internet. In the weiss’raum, visitors have the opportunity to discover new topics by being guided, through presentations, through one-on-one conversations, and by taping into further information on the internet. This has not existed in such a form before.”

More detailed information about the concept, the program, and participating in it are already available at their website. Please direct queries to Ms. Sandra Winter.
