TOC Frankfurt – Platform for Visionaries

Conference on the future of publishing brings international digital experts to Frankfurt / Programme now online

Frankfurt, 30.9.2009 - Tools of Change for Publishing (TOC), the most important US conference in the field of publishing technology and innovation, will celebrate its European premiere on Tuesday, October 13th. This one-day conference, co-organised by the Frankfurt Book Fair with O’Reilly Media, brings together decision-makers and digital experts from the international publishing industry. The latest trends will be analysed and evaluated in more than 20 keynotes, panel discussions and presentations. In addition to promising new business models, the key topics of the conference will include the future role of publishers, the opportunities and challenges of mobile publishing, future distribution channels, as well as changing reading habits and the influence they have on the development of new products.

Books on the cloud? Future scenarios for publishers

What does the publishing house of the future look like and how is the role of publishers changing? Sara Lloyd (Pan Macmillan) provides answers to these questions in her opening presentation. The outsourcing of books to external data servers may still seem a long way off to some - but Virginie Clayssen (Editis) sees potential in this for publishers. In her presentation “Books on the Cloud”, she will examine the opportunities and risks of cloud computing for publishers.

Innovative: Mobile publishing & digital distribution channels

Smartphones are considered to be the future model for success. Under the motto “Making the Most of Mobile” Timo Hannay (Nature Publishing Group) reveals how publishers of scientific books can adapt their content to mobile phones. Jon White (Macmillan Education) examines sustainable payment models for digital content in his presentation “Mobile Survey: Mobile Paid Content Around the World”. Amazon and Google might be the biggest players on the E-Book market – but they are not the only ones. Ronald Schild (MVB) presents alternative sales channels for E-Books and analyses international configurations of the E-Book market. Google Book Search engineer Dan Clancy provides a look behind the scenes of the Internet giant and presents the Google Editions project. Neelan Choksi (Lexcycle), whose iPhone application “Stanza” has been downloaded millions of times since its launch, delivers a best practice example on the subject.

Creative and intuitive: The user of tomorrow

What was once the domain of trained experts is now child’s play for so-called digital natives. And no audience is keeping up with the rapid developments in the technology market better than 15 to 17-year-olds. Adobe recognised the creative potential of this generation and brought many astonishing findings to light in a series of interviews. Matt Hamlin (Adobe) will present the results. Cristina Mussinelli (Associazione Italiana Editori) will also focus on the youth audience: Her contribution will examine the influence of new technologies on the way young people consume books, music, news and other media.

International markets at a glance

Changing media consumption habits have a direct impact on the purchasing behaviour of customers: Ann Betts (Nielsen Book) analyses the current market situation worldwide, particularly with regard to the sale of E-Books. Marie Bilde Rasmussen and Cliff Thaudahl Hansen of Gyldendal and Ramy Habeeb of Kotobarabia provide insights into the Danish and Arab book market respectively and into individual business strategies in their respective countries.

Under the title “Reasons to be excited”, CEO and digital publishing visionary Tim O’Reilly takes a positive approach to the process of digitisation and emphasises the opportunities for media companies and publishers that result from it.
