Herta Mueller Awarded Nobel Prize in Literature

Herta Mueller has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming only the 12th woman to win the prestigious award since its inception in 1901.

Born in Nitzkydorf, Romania in 1953, Mueller was a member of the country's oft persecuted German speaking minority. From 1973 to 1976 she studied German and Romanian literature at Timişoara University and was involved with Aktionsgruppe Banat, a group of young German speaking authors seeking freedom of speech under the Ceausescu dictatorship.

In 1982 Mueller published her first work, a collection of short stories entitled “Niederungen,” followed two years later by "Drueckender Tango." Though censored in her home country, her work was well received in Germany. After openly criticizing the Romanian government she was forbidden to publish her work and emigrated with her husband, and fellow novelist, Richard Wagner to Berlin.

Her works include, among others, "Herztier", "Heute wär ich mir lieber nicht begegnet" and "Der König verneigt sich und tötet". Her most recent work, "Atemschaukel", was published by Hanser Verlag in 2009 (for translation rights contact: Friederike Barakat, Hanser Verlag).
