The GBO recommends suitable German titles to North American publishers via its Rights List.

Twice a year, the GBO presents new German-language titles - both fiction and non-fiction - of specific interest to the North American market.

Twice a year, the GBO releases Adult Rights Lists of fiction and nonfiction. The fiction titles are selected with the Goethe-Institut based on recommendations from book critics and publishing professionals. All of the fiction titles on GBO rights list are guaranteed a 25-page sample translation and at least partial translation funding through the New Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Grant (see below for more information).

Once a year, the GBO presents its Children’s Books Rights List, a collection of picture books, juvenile fiction and nonfiction, and young adult fiction. This list is presented to North American publishers throughout the year at book fairs and in meetings. This provides North American publishers and editors the opportunity to read about new German-language children’s books that are appropriate to the American book market. The GBO also provides expanded contact information and links to publishers’ websites.

The Children’s Books Rights List has been compiled in cooperation with German rights directors and the International Department of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The New Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Grant, a joint initiative of the Goethe-Institut and the German Book Office, funds German fiction in the USA. Here's how it works:

• A selection of fiction titles - the season’s favorites - appear on each German Book Office Rights List, which is presented twice yearly
• Interested publishers can request a free 25-page sample translation
• Titles from the list acquired by American publishers are guaranteed partial funding
• If you are interested in publishing a fiction title not on the rights list, give us a call

Translation funding for nonfiction works on humanities and social sciences from Germany is available through a new grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, and German Federal Foreign Office. Geisteswissenschaften International: Translation Funding for Humanities and Social Sciences from Germany rewards innovative academic works on humanities and social sciences written in German by providing funding for the translation of such works into English.

Applications will be accepted from publishing companies with academic publications in the fields of humanities and social sciences. They should submit their own selection of titles for which a rights option agreement is already in place, and provide a brief summary of the reasons for their selection. The amount of funding will depend on each individual case and the actual translation costs. The titles to receive funding will be chosen twice a year by an independent selection panel made up of academics, qualified journalists and scientific publishers.

The Arts and Culture Department of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education offers translation funding for contemporary works of poetry, prose, drama, and essays to publishers and translators.

• Grants are available to publishers for the translation of literary texts by contemporary Austrian authors
• Several grants are available, including a translation award for works of contemporary literature, a work grant for translations in progress, and a travel grant for up to three months.

Applications should include the translator’s CV and list of translated works, cost estimates, copies of contracts, and 20 pages of sample text (the original and the translation).

The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia provides assistance to foreign publishers for the translation of literary works by Swiss authors for publication abroad.

• Eligible books include fiction, poetry, drama, essays, and children’s literature by Swiss authors. Nonfiction titles related to Swiss culture and targeted to a public market are also eligible. First translations only.
• Professional foreign publishing houses with an active backlist can receive funding
• The application deadline is at least eight weeks before the book goes to press. No grants will be awarded for works already in print or published.

The New York State Council on the Arts offers funding literary translations into English based on the accuracy of the translation and the literary quality of the original work. Grants range from $2,500 to $5,000 and the request for funding must be sponsored by a nonprofit organization. The registration deadline is March 1st and the application deadline is July 3rd. The PEN Translation Fund offers grants from $2,000 to $10,000 for the translation of literary works from a variety of languages into English and proposals are judged on the quality of the original work and of the translation.
